They say you're not growing Joe...
Oh my child who waves the red flag at every turn, I thought I'd be writing a nice 4 month update post, but we've hit another bump in the road...
If you recall from Joe's last update, he weighed 10 pounds at the beginning of 2 months and 11.5 pounds by the end of the month, well, he still weighs 11.5 pounds at 4 months. His weight flatlined. He went from the 70th percentile to at 1and a half percentile.
He is growing in other areas. His length went from 22" at his 2 month checkup to 24.75" and his head went from 16 to 17cm.
Other concerns we have are that he is coliky & spits up massive amounts despite reflux medicine. He went from pooping a lot of times a day to pooping once a week, which can be typical of a breastfed baby going through a growth spurt, but as a result they smell absolutely wicked as does the gas leading up to them to the point I start chewing out the dog or asking the preschoolers to check their shoes for poop! His burps aren't much better.
Things that have been ruled out:
Pyloric stynosis, tongue tie (as far as we know), low volume of milk
Things we are still looking into:
lactose allergy and metabolism malfuntion or something else GI
What we are doing:
Trying to cut dairy
Taking a probiotic (me so far)
Upped the reflux meds to a more productive dose.
Chiropractor, often, for colik & reflux, which also allowed him to poop more -bonus!

We are supplumenting some amino acid weight gain formula through a tube while nursing. Yeah it's as awkward as it sounds, but I get to nurse him and not just give him a bottle. Joe hasn't warmed up to it yet, but I'm anticipating it might take as many feedings as the last stuff did. This has replaced the original instructions of attempts at exclusive bottle feeding. I was struggling with the idea of not nursing as I've always nursed my babies & to add insult to injury, Joe was NOT A FAN of the bottle. He absolutely hated the Doc Brown Options & batted them away & spit the formula out as fast as it went in for 2 days straight, I switched to the Nuk, same all day. Finally last night on day 3, he decided to take about 2oz from the Nuk. So whether or not it was actually the Doc Brown bottle, or having to take a bottle in general, or the taste of the formula, I'm not sure. I did not let him starve during this time, I kept nursing him & kept trying the bottle before, between and after.
Friday we started trying a gentle ease formula and an A.R. formula for acid reflux. Today when we went in to assess how much he was getting vs how much he was spitting up and how much he was retaining, we weighed him, he nursed for 33 minutes total (normally closer to 40 minutes, but as hard as I tried to relax & chat with my friend, I was still super stressed & I feel we've done better), he spit up not sure how much, then when weighed again by the maticulous scale, he had retained 5 ounces. He eats around 7 times a day resulting in approximately 35 ounces a day by those estimates on an average. This is more than the minimum he should be getting, therefore he should be gaining weight, yet he was 2 ounces less today than he was at his appointment Friday. He had lost weight over the weekend depite upping how many times he ate, trying and trying to get formula in him & finally suceeding. It was very disheartening. We have a plan & we will go back & keep on it until we thicken the kid up.
The amino formula has been known in some other cases, for reasons not completely known, to jump start a correction for similar situations in other babies which could be a huge bonus if Joe goes that route, but it's Joe, I won't hold my breath. He just doesn't like the easy route on anything.
This week is filled with appointments to check up on him & to curb him in the right direction.
We'll keep you posted.
